Wireless Network Scan - 13 Sep 05

The client had previously maintained a strict “no wireless” policy, however to satisfy business drivers of flexibility and cost saving, had implemented a small wireless network for use by staff with wireless-enabled Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and laptop computers.

Given this move to providing wireless access, the client sought to assure the security configuration of the wireless network, and also wished to validate that rogue access points had not been implemented within the corporate headquarters in contravention of organisational policy.

Recently being subject to a merger with a listed company, due diligence around the organisation’s network required the Group IT Manager to have confidence in the integrity of the system configuration.
SIFT was engaged to conduct a two phase assessment of the wireless network environment:

  • Phase 1: Conduct a wireless “sweep” of the corporate headquarters to identify wireless networks and devices. Analyse data and determine likely location and/or “owner” of identified devices.
  • Phase 2: Assess the configuration of wireless networks identified in Phase 1, using both negative assessment (penetration testing); and positive assessment (configuration review) approaches.

SIFT delivered a report detailing over twenty wireless networks identified as being reachable from the client’s corporate headquarters. Of these devices, five were suspected to exist within the client’s organisation. A detailed configuration review provided guidance on configuration, with the recommendations implemented prior to the system rolling out.

As a result of having a system configuration review conducted, and implementing the associated recommendations, the client is now able to deploy wireless networks where required to meet flexibility, mobility and cost saving goals, while maintaining confidence in the security of the system.
