Voice over IP

Voice over IP (VoIP) is an emerging technology that enables the convergence of voice and data networks and reduced telephony costs. The increasing uptake of VoIP in the enterprise sector as critical communications infrastructure has ensured that VoIP security is at the forefront of deployment issues. The threats that organisations face when deploying VoIP are varied and include eavesdropping on conversations, service disruption and impersonation attacks. Furthermore, traditional threats to the underlying infrastructure also apply to the VoIP environment including protocol exploits, operating system flaws and malware.

The key issues for an organisation planning a VoIP deployment are privacy and integrity of conversations, usage tracking and the ability to comply with telecommunications regulations. The latter includes availability concerns regarding the ability to provide reliable emergency call access and law enforcement concerns regarding the ability for government agencies to perform electronic surveillance.
