Cyber insurance refers to a group of insurance products that can be purchased by organisations in an effort to transfer the financial consequences of exposure to cyber risks. While they have found growing popularity internationally, adoption in Australia has been slow. Rather, most Australian organisations have internalised these risks by using a range of self-insurance mechanisms. This presentation examines IT vulnerability as an economic problem and aims to consider the potential for cyber insurance to provide individual, organisational as well as societal benefits in the form of a "5-tier Benefits Model". Discussion will also include the nature of current global cyber insurance offerings and the roles key market players must take in order to accelerate the maturation of the cyber insurance market in Australia.
