Intro to Encryption & PKI
Overview Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) has been shrouded in myth, misunderstanding and hype for many years. PKI has been identified as the “killer app” for e-commerce, the key to single sign-on, the solution to authentication, confidentiality and privacy concerns, and much more.
While thus far, PKI has failed to deliver on these unrealistic promises, for organisations looking to generate a return on security investment, PKI remains an important enabler.
This course provides a vendor and solution neutral view of PKI, presenting a realistic and thorough examination of the topic as well as identifying risks, unanswered questions, and future directions.
Prerequisites
The prerequisites for this course are business knowledge and interest to learn about preparing for e-commerce business.
Duration
Introduction to Encryption & Public Key Infrastructure is a 2 day course, running each day from 9.00am until 5.00pm. Contact us for information on scheduled dates.
Audience
This course is intended for anyone involved in PKI decision-making, management or analysis, including Chief Information Officers, Chief Security Officers, IT Managers and Project Managers, Security Managers, Internal Auditors and Business-Unit Managers involved as end-users.
What will you take away?
In order to fully appreciate the opportunities, unresolved issues, and implementation life cycle surrounding PKI, it is necessary to have a solid understanding of the underlying technologies, as well as an understanding of the full scope of the “infrastructure”.
Participants in this course will take away:
- An understanding of what the required “Infrastructure” actually involves;
- A thorough understanding of the underlying technologies and business requirements to ensure the right questions are asked when looking at a PKI solution;
- Practical detail on how to assess the opportunity for a PKI, the associated risks, and the expected Return on Investment (ROI);
- A strategic, tactical, and operational understanding of planning, implementing, and operating an enterprise-wide PKI; and
- The knowledge of PKI necessary to evaluate vendor solutions and offerings.
Course Development
Introduction to Encryption & Public Key Infrastructure has been developed by Aspect Computing and information security consultants SIFT, in consultation with the former National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE).
Course Topics
Day 1 – Foundations of PKI & PKT
In order to fully appreciate the opportunities, outstanding issues, and implementation life cycle surrounding PKI, it is necessary to have a solid understanding of the underlying technologies. Day 1 starts with general security basics, providing a broad overview of information security, highlighting the problems PKI is in place to address. From this base, an overview of networking technologies, along with a thorough coverage of the theory underlying cryptography, and its application in digital signatures and digital certificates, will be provided.
Day 2 – PKI Standards, Implementations & Directions
Day 2 looks at the practical issues surrounding PKI in both Government and the private sector. Starting with coverage of the standards & protocols in place, then looking at the practical applications of PKI currently in use, the steps involved in implementing a PKI and the supporting infrastructure, and finishing with a look at the future directions, Day 2 will ensure the right questions are asked when looking at a PKI solution.
